Studio Biography

New Chamber Opera Studio was developed in its present form during 2000, by Stephen Rice, the Studio's first director, and Michael Burden, New Chamber Opera's director productions. Its principal aim is to focus New Chamber Opera's work with undergraduates into a unified workshop in which, during each term, the members of the Studio prepare extracts or small operas. Since then, it has presented a range of small pieces and extracts, and has prepared the material for three Hambro Visiting Professors of Operas, Thomas Allen, Phillip Gossett, and Graham Vick. The Studio is now directed by Hugh Brunt.

Hugh's musical career began as a chorister at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. From gaining the major music scholarship to Radley College in 1999, he progressed on to become a composer with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain under Paul Patterson. Now in his second year at New College, where he also holds a choral scholarship, Hugh directs the Wykeham Singers & Orchestra with recent concerts including performances of Haydn's Nelsonmesse and Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music.

Hugh is active as a composer; his most recent premieres have been at the Holywell Music Room, for the Oxford Literary Festival in 2003 and Blurred at The Lake District Summer Music Festival 2004 by The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain Sinfonietta. His Netessiahsy for two pianos and film has had numerous broadcasts on Classic FM heralding Hugh as 'the composing star of the future'. Hugh is also conductor of the Oxford New Orchestra, with upcoming engagements including a performance of Schubert's Symphony No.5 in October, and Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations in March.
